In other respects, the device worked fine. I don't really recommend Russian toilet paper for use other than as a field expedient.
If any of the folks who have made a shim care to share their materials, manufacturing method, and dimensions, it would help the rest of us. If you, as I, think your Digimate II-plus does not need a shim because it has worked so far, quite likely you are wrong, and the device may well fail after airline handling in a place you both want pictures and lack tools. I used the sturdy "crepe-paper style" Russian toilet paper in our Urgench, Uzbekistan hotel to improvise another shim, this time using so much I really had to work to get the case closed back up. On opening I could see the drive had moved part way off the connector, so it was plausible that enough pins were connected to be sensed as a hard drive, but not enough to work. This time it knew it had a HD, but after a few seconds it illuminated a "fail" indication and displayed what I believe was an error code. The Digimate worked for a few days, but after another bit of hard baggage handling (the internal flights in China really beat up our luggage-lots of scuffs, and other hints of hard use), the Digimate failed again. I had forgotten to bring along the supplied small screwdriver, but was able to use the small flat screwdriver on my wife's Micra Leatherman to get the case open. Sure enough, when I got to China the Digimate did not work, acting as though it had no hard drive at all (the HD icon did not illuminate). The supplied one is not wide enough, so it gives the drive room to slide most of the way off the connector under impact or vibration. My one problem (twice) was that I had failed to heed the posters who warned that we need to supplement the supplied shim which holds the hard drive down on its connector.
I took my Digimate II-plus on a three week tour in western China and Uzbekistan.
